Common questions
I'm a smoker with morning cough — is that COPD?
Chronic morning cough and breathlessness in a smoker (or ex-smoker) is the classic early picture. A spirometry test confirms COPD and grades its severity — we do it in-house.COPD guide →
Can COPD be reversed?
Lung damage does not reverse, but symptoms, flare frequency and quality of life improve a lot with the right inhalers, pulmonary rehab and stopping smoking. Many patients feel substantially better within weeks.COPD guide →
Do I need oxygen at home?
Only a minority do. We measure resting and walking oxygen saturation and arrange a formal assessment before recommending home oxygen — it is not for everyone.
How often should I review?
Stable COPD: every 3–6 months. After a flare or hospital admission: within 2–4 weeks to prevent another.
What should I do if my COPD suddenly gets worse?
An increase in breathlessness, cough or sputum may be a flare-up, but pneumonia and heart problems can cause similar symptoms. Follow your personalised action plan and seek prompt medical advice. Severe breathlessness at rest, blue lips, confusion or chest pain needs emergency assessment. Do not start leftover antibiotics, steroids or change oxygen flow unless your clinician has given specific instructions.COPD guide →
Can exercise and nutrition help with COPD?
Pulmonary rehabilitation combines individually assessed exercise, education and breathing strategies to improve daily function and manage breathlessness. Unintentional weight loss or loss of muscle strength should also be reviewed; nutritional support may be appropriate. Exercise is adapted to your fitness and other medical conditions, and supplements or strenuous activity should not be started as a substitute for assessment.COPD guide →
What should I bring to a COPD appointment?
Bring your inhalers, spacer, medication list, previous spirometry and scan reports, and discharge summaries from recent admissions. Note how far you can walk, changes in sputum, flare-ups and any home oxygen prescription. These details help assess symptoms, inhaler technique and future flare risk alongside lung function, rather than choosing treatment from a spirometry number alone.COPD guide →
